What Do Employers Look For When Hiring?

When you are looking for work it is important to try to understand how a potential employer will be looking at your application to work out how you can maximise your chances of being successful. There are some very basic things that are common to all employers and of course those are based around certain values which are needed for all kinds of employment.

Good time keeping, punctuality, personal hygiene and presentation and a good positive attitude are things that anyone looking for a job needs to be able to show a prospective employer. After all, nobody will want to hire someone who is surly or ill mannered or who turns up for an interview late or unprepared. These things are very basic matters of common sense but a surprising amount of people fall down on any number of these points.

By simply looking after the basics you are already giving yourself an advantage over a number of people but there are many more things you can do to make yourself the perfect candidate.

Previous experience

If you have previous experience in the role you are going for this can be a big plus but you must be able to prove it. Ensure your CV highlights this experience and that you show your knowledge of the work involved at interview.

Basic communication skills

There are other skills, such as literacy and numeracy that are common to many jobs and which you can demonstrate by having qualifications in the various disciplines. If you feel that there are areas in which you could improve then you can always look into the various City & Guilds qualifications that are designed to get you up to speed. Most employers take this type of qualification very seriously and they are a great benefit to have on a CV.

Of the basic functional skills literacy is probably the most important. Today the vast majority of jobs include some kind of interface with computers or other data collection devices which entail decent reading and writing skills. If English is not your first language it is essential to be fluent and confident enough to communicate and converse in day to day routines.

There are many different ways to improve basic literacy and numeracy skills, from traditional forms of night class education to home based distance learning systems which have the advantage of letting you work at your own speed and in your own time. Whatever you choose, dedicate yourself to your studies and gain the necessary qualification to demonstrate your proficiency in this area.

Computing capability

Basic computing skills are another essential part of daily life and there are often local courses run by councils and educational bodies that give access to equipment and qualified personnel who can make learning the basics an easy and straightforward process. You should be able to demonstrate a basic working knowledge of common computer systems including the Microsoft Office suite and internet browsers but should also consider familiarising yourself with any other key programs which are relevant to the job you’re applying for.
